Garmin Announces GPS Product Support For Mac OS X
posted by acaben on Thursday January 12, @01:07PM
from the integrate-this-with-gooEarth-and-you-might-have-something dept.
News kev0153 writes "Amongst all the exciting news today I saw this little gem. Garmin International Inc. today announced that it will immediately begin to make its line of GPS and mobile electronics devices compatible with Mac OS X version 10.4 "Tiger." This makes Garmin the first major GPS designer and manufacturer to announce direct support for Mac OS X.
"We are very excited to be supporting the many tech-savvy Garmin users who are also Mac devotees," said Min Kao, Garmin Ltd.'s chairman and CEO. "Mac users have been encouraging us to make our GPS units Mac compatible, and we've listened. We hope this brings the many benefits of GPS to current Mac users and invites future Apple customers to the Garmin fold." The rest of the press release can be found here."

The begining of a trend... (Score:2)

I think a trend is developing where more and more products, software and/or hardware, support Apple/OS X. Apple has had a very high profile of late and as the buzz grows, so will the percentage of Mac users. Combined with Apple's move to Intel (read standard) processors, OS X support isn't as difficult, technically or financially, as it once was.

Unless you are writing your code in assembler, what difference does it make? None.

Does a program written in "C" care what processor it runs on?

No. It just has to be ported/authored, and compiled.

Moving to a different architecture (PowerPC -> X86) has little to no impact on software portability. The biggest hurdle is writing an application for two very different graphic interfaces. Cross-compilation (which is determined by the processor) is relatively easy.

So, really, it's just a matter of enough people being interested that they're willing to invest some extra development time to snatch up enough paying customers.

I have to admit I am pretty impressed by the Google Earth application. Feeding it live GPS data while having a live network connection could make for some very cool possibilities.

I haven't tried anything yet but this is great news!

I bought VirtualPC just to make my GPS work.

The problem is, I upgraded from an eTrex Legend (which worked okay in serial usb mode), to a GPSMAP 76C. Which has a weird and non-kosher USB hookup. Doesn't work with Mac. Or with VMWARE and linux.

I just read the release... Summary:

    ".. spring 2006 .. Mac version .. ForeRunner .. software..."

"By the end of 2006, Garmin intends to have made all of its popular hardware and software applications Mac OS X compatible. This includes the ability to load MapSource map data..."

I can dump my Garmin to MacGPS Pro under OSX, but until now, loading vector maps e.g., topo lines, roads, was limited to using Garmin software. MacGPS Pro provides for transfer of waypoints and tracks and allows overlay on a raster, but does not handle any of the annoyingly proprietary Garmin vector map formats.

In past postings I've shared some of my correspondence with DeLorme wherein I encouraged them to renew -- or perhaps more aptly, resurrect -- development and support of their excellent application Street Atlas for the Mac (last seen corporeally as Version 6.0.1 for OS 9). In view this announcement, might they now find Street Atlas for Mac OS X to be a viable product? I suppose it's time I sent them yet another e-mail to find out!
