I think a trend is developing where more and more products, software and/or hardware, support Apple/OS X. Apple has had a very high profile of late and as the buzz grows, so will the percentage of Mac users. Combined with Apple's move to Intel (read standard) processors, OS X support isn't as difficult, technically or financially, as it once was.

Unless you are writing your code in assembler, what difference does it make? None.
Does a program written in "C" care what processor it runs on?
No. It just has to be ported/authored, and compiled.

Moving to a different architecture (PowerPC -> X86) has little to no impact on software portability. The biggest hurdle is writing an application for two very different graphic interfaces. Cross-compilation (which is determined by the processor) is relatively easy.
So, really, it's just a matter of enough people being interested that they're willing to invest some extra development time to snatch up enough paying customers.

I have to admit I am pretty impressed by the Google Earth application. Feeding it live GPS data while having a live network connection could make for some very cool possibilities.

I haven't tried anything yet but this is great news!
I bought VirtualPC just to make my GPS work.
The problem is, I upgraded from an eTrex Legend (which worked okay in serial usb mode), to a GPSMAP 76C. Which has a weird and non-kosher USB hookup. Doesn't work with Mac. Or with VMWARE and linux.
I just read the release... Summary:
".. spring 2006 .. Mac version .. ForeRunner .. software..."
"By the end of 2006, Garmin intends to have made all of its popular hardware and software applications Mac OS X compatible. This includes the ability to load MapSource map data..."

A GPS unit isn't much help if you can't find the receiver... (misplaced mine... again!)

Actually Garmin isn't the first to support the Mac... TomTom already does.

What exactly does this mean? What will they be doing to support Mac users? I've been using Garmin GPS units on OS X already for some time.

I can dump my Garmin to MacGPS Pro under OSX, but until now, loading vector maps e.g., topo lines, roads, was limited to using Garmin software. MacGPS Pro provides for transfer of waypoints and tracks and allows overlay on a raster, but does not handle any of the annoyingly proprietary Garmin vector map formats.
If only ESRI would come back to the Mac with its pro GIS apps, I could throw away the Delldo I'm typing on...

If only ESRI would come back, I wouldn't have to buy a stupid PC laptop to lug around in addition to my Mac laptop. If only.

I think it means we can buy GPS 18 USB with nRoute the last quarter (hopefully earlier). I think nRoute is Garmin answer to Street Atlas and I hope it will be Universal binary.
