MacWorld: Apple Announces iPod FM Remote
posted by j on Tuesday January 10, @09:31AM
from the first-of-the-new-updates dept.
Music Jennifer DeLeo writes "At this year's Macworld Expo in San Francisco, Apple just announced a remote control for the current-generation iPod that has an integrated FM tuner. When you tune into a radio station, the station is displayed on the iPod's screen. It's pretty small, and people have been asking for something like this for a long time, though we're still wishing for this feature to be integrated into the iPod itself. The remote is available for $49 directly from Apple." Cool! 80 year old technology, now available in white plastic gizmo for only $50. Or, as acaben said about the original iPod, it's over-priced, under-featured, and I'd be surprised if they sold two of them. His Apple Prognosticating skills are unrivaled. :)

Screw FM. If I liked listening to the radio, I would not have bought an iPod in the first place.

Which leaves us with a remote control for a gadget which is about the size of a remote control. That makes about as much sense as putting a screen door on a submarine.

All this really does is give us a fair chance at shutting up all the annoying kids with their Rio Cinderblocks posting endlessly on Slashdot about how iPods are "t3h sux0r" because iPods have no radio and their handbag-sized el-cheapo MP3 players have 'em.

A few more steps, and we'll be safe in the Fire Swamp.

iPod is something like the only MP3/whatever player that doesn't have radio built-in

Oh, and for all of you that would say 'just record the radio and listen later' as a lame-ass excuse: I can't record or listen to live (as in, "right now") news and sports.
    Firmware version 1.1. (Score:3, Informative)

It only works on the 5G iPod and the iPod Nano, and appears to require at least firmware version 1.1 on both to work.

So when is that firmware going to appear, and will it also fix the various minor problems with the 5G iPod.

It does use RDS to display station names - will that also mean that it'll automatically retune to the strongest signal, as RDS does in cards? I spend a lot of time commuting on a bus to and from work, and the route covers at least 2 different BBC Radio transmitters. I usually have to manually retune my pocket radio part-way through the journey - RDS will make this automatic by tracking the strongest signal sending the current RDS station ID.
That was fun while it lasted. Powered by Slash
