Penryn, Intel's New Core 2
posted by Trollaxor on Thursday March 29, @05:00AM
CPU Microfrofactor writes

Intel has word on the next update to its Core 2 line of processors, dubbed Penryn, due later this year.

You can grab the fact sheet in PDF format too. DailyTech has a good, somewhat more readable article based on the press release. Basically, on the tick, Intel makes a new microarch. In our case, this would be Core 2. On the tock, Intel shrinks the new microarch, bumps the specs up a little, and throws in a couple of tweaks. Penryn would be our upcoming tock. And after that, according to the above, Nehalem will be the next tick, a new microarch (Core 3?).

The current iMac lineup isn't that far behind other mid-range desktops, but if there won't be any quad-core mobile chips for the time being, then that will soon change as quad-core chips come down in price.

smaller, less heat, more mhz, faster, and scales to 8 cores - what's not to like?
That was fun while it lasted. Powered by Slash
