Too Many /dev/disk Devices in Tiger on a G5
posted by Trollaxor on Monday April 21, @03:45AM
Mac OS X dwhite21787 writesII attach and detach many disk images in a day, and it seems that the available /dev/disk? devices fill up. Is there a way to "flush" these? I have to reboot now to keep working, and that can't be the only way. I'm on a G5 Xserve running 10.4.

Have you tried using the `hdiutil' command?

Basic usage can be done with:

hdiutil info | grep /dev/disk <-- shows only disk devices from disk images

hdiutil eject disk2 -- eject disk device

    Hope this helps

This is one of the most moderated posts I've ever seen here. It seems like it has attracted a number of positive mods that are followed by negative mods to keep it rated -1.

One of my biggest objections regarding this site is its stingy mod point policy. Sites like SlashDot [slashdot.org] thrive in part because of the freedom to moderate and ample moderation points given to members. All the time I've visited this site I've only been a moderator ONCE and then only received a SINGLE MOD POINT. How much of a contribution can you make with one point?

This site is built on Slashcode and has the same tools as Slashdot. There is no reason why the community that visits this site cannot be as lively and engaging as the one on /. . What is preventing it, IMHO, is a lack of free discourse by limiting moderation and a lack of metamoderation.

Let the baiters get flamed. Let valid posts be moderated up. But most of all, don't control discourse by controlling mod points and don't mod down simply because you don't agree with the content of a post.

Every rule has an exception. Especially this one.
