Ask MacSlash: Too Many /dev/disk Devices in Tiger on a G5
posted by Trollaxor on Monday April 21, @03:45AM
Mac OS X dwhite21787 writesII attach and detach many disk images in a day, and it seems that the available /dev/disk? devices fill up. Is there a way to "flush" these? I have to reboot now to keep working, and that can't be the only way. I'm on a G5 Xserve running 10.4.

Ask MacSlash: Double-Sided Scanning in Leopard
posted by Trollaxor on Sunday March 30, @05:02AM
Software StickyC writes

The final step in my move from Windows to OS-X is my document management solution. I'm using Paperport on Windows with my Brother MFC-8500 document-fed scanner/printer/fax. Where things are falling flat is in the scanning department. Paperport has an excellent feature that helps import double-sided pages by scanning the front of the document stack, then scanning the back of the document stack and automatically collating the pages together to create a nice PDF. Does anything with this capability exist for Leopard yet? VueScan seemed like it might, but it doesn't work with Brother devices. Scanning in DevonThink is broken under Leopard. Brother's included scanner software is as minimalist as possible.

Ask MacSlash: Opening & Tiling TextEdit Documents
posted by Trollaxor on Sunday March 09, @09:18AM
Mac OS X dwhite21787 asks

I need to open 4 text files at once, for a particular task. Right now, I highlight them in Finder and use TextEdit to open them. Then I have to resize the windows and move them so they tile the whole screen. Is there a way to script or tweak TextEdit to open four windows of specific size at determined locations? Or can someone suggest an app that can? Thanks - Doug

Resource Site For Switchers
posted by acaben on Friday February 01, @09:25AM
The Web Caroline Merchiers writes "According to The Mac Observer, 40% of retail sales are represented by 'switchers'. It would be safe to assume that another portion of Mac sales are made by users new to computers entirely. Last time I checked, Macs come with a rather bare bones instruction manual, if they come with anything at all. While most of us feel OS X is designed so well, it is self documenting, not all users have such an easy time. OS X Help made it's first post on January 06th 2008, in an effort to guide a new user though the process of becoming proficient with OS X. Most of the readers here on MacSlash probably are well beyond these types of tutorials. That being the case, we feel the site is a great starting point for new users. Rather than pulling your hair out trying to teach basic concepts to whoever you convinced to buy a Macintosh, just send them our way." Kinda' weird that a site for new mac users uses the geekiest and most obscure Mac-related mascot, Hexley. (Also, my personal favorite mascot ever. )

MacBook Air Dissected And Analyzed
posted by acaben on Friday February 01, @07:07AM
Portables kwiens writes "We just finished dissecting our MacBook Air. Our online disassembly shows Apple's elegant internal design with high resolution photos and notes about interesting design decisions. As we already knew, Apple is using industry standard 5mm tall Samsung PATA 1.8" 80 GB single-platter drives. The 160 GB dual-platter drive used in the iPod Classic is 3mm too tall to fit in the super-thin new enclosure. Turns out that the battery is fairly easy to replace after all, for those of you who don't feel like giving up your baby to Apple for service. And most surprisingly, we learned that Apple is using the same Broadcom BCM5974 touch controller chip that they ship with the iPhone and iPod Touch. That's one sophisticated trackpad!"

Articles: Cuban An Apple Fanboy
posted by acaben on Friday January 25, @07:42AM
iPod + iTunes Mark Cuban, the outspoken owner of the Dallas Mavericks, HDnet, and dotcom v.1 millionaire is a self-admitted Apple Fanboy. He's gone through several generations of iPods and was one of the first to order the MacBook Air. But what's most interesting is that he's working on ways to embrace Apple's idea of the iPod Touch as not just an iPod, but a mobile wireless platform.
"I just sent an email to the Mavs IT head to see how we fans with ITouchs (and Wifi devices like Nokia among others) could leverage WiFi in the American Airlines Center before , during and after Mavs games, HDNet Fights and other events..."

That's good news, since Apple announced in it's most recent earnings conference call that they way to grow the iPod line is by looking at it as more than just a music playing device.

Articles: Easy Energy Saver Control
posted by acaben on Friday January 25, @07:22AM
Software Bryan Hansen writes "MacSlash, I've been a professional mac developer for a couple years now and recently I've spent some time on a couple small side-project apps and I'm trying to let people know about my latest effort, Jolt.

If you've ever wanted to delay energy saver from kicking in for just a few minutes so you can watch a YouTube video, read something on the screen, etc without having to touch the mouse, then Jolt is for you. I've always had a fascination with solid and simple user interfaces, so I've designed Jolt with that in mind. One click and its active. I'm also benefiting some charities through this app to let people support some worthy causes.

If you find it useful I'd love it to be mentioned in any way. The biggest problem for mac apps like this is getting the word out that they even exist. "

Q1 Financial Results
posted by acaben on Tuesday January 22, @11:57AM
Financials Apple announced record profits this afternoon and held a conference call to discuss the results with analysts and press. While Wall Street was expecting earnings of $1.62/share, Apple's results were $1.76 per share. Mac sales were up sharply from a year ago, at 2,319,000 Macs sold. Further details from the call are below in my hastily typed notes.

Ask MacSlash: Should I Be Using Filemaker?
posted by j on Sunday January 20, @07:23PM
Software a.smelgus10 writes "Hey, I am trying to create a database for my real-estate Contracts, and Addendum's. I am trying to create two boxes. (portals, fields, I don't know which) One box would be " Unselected Contracts ", the other, "selected Contracts". The unselected contracts would have a list of all my real-estate contracts, addendum's ect. When i highlight one, and click "add" it would remove it from the "unselected forms" and move it the the "selected forms" Then I would click "next" and I would go to another layout, Which would have my "selected forms" (note: these are not the actual forms, just links to them, sort of like a container field, but a container portal, if that makes since). From there I can print, ect. I'm not a computer Guy, so I don't know how to attach something here, or do HTML. So should I be using Filemaker, or another program? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks"
